Wine
The Fonrand Cuvée Le Rouge from the Domaine de Marotte winery is made from 40% Grenache noir, 25% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 15% Carignan. The colour of the wine is purple-red. In the nose, aromas can be recognised such as dried herbs and spices, dried fruit, liquorice and even some smoky tones. Smooth, complex and fruity in the taste. Nicely round with a long aftertaste.
Even serve slightly chilled with a creamy fish dish or, for example, pastrami and carpaccio.
Domaine de Marotte Winery is a beautiful winery at the foot of Mont Ventoux. Here you will find a historic monastery farm, a so-called Mas from the 16th century. In the past, vegetables, fruit and truffle oaks grew there, but today everything revolves around wine.
In 1998, Daan & Elvire van Dijkman moved to France to pursue their dream. The vineyards are located on different types of soil. The southern plateau has an iron-rich soil with sand and pebbles, ideal for wet years. The northern side is clayey, which ensures healthy grapes in dry years.
Marotte works completely organically. Weeds are removed manually or mechanically, and healthy soil life is central. This ensures strong plants and powerful flavours in the grapes.
The Ventoux region
is a wine region in the south-east of the southern Rhône, on the border with Provence. The region is located in the French Vaucluse, about 40 km northeast of Avignon.
The wines of Ventoux are very similar to those of the Côtes du Rhône and are made from the same grape varieties. The most commonly used red grapes are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. White wines are also produced, mainly from Clairette and Grenache Blanc, supplemented with Roussanne or Viognier .
Mont Ventoux, the imposing mountain also known as the “Giant of Provence”, towers high above the wine region. On the western slopes and foothills of the mountain, in an area of about 50 km long and 51 municipalities, lie the vineyards of the Ventoux appellation. In the south, the area borders the Côtes du Luberon.
Wine growing in Ventoux dates back to the 1st century AD and over the centuries even popes and kings enjoyed these wines.
The wines from Ventoux are generally lighter and fruitier than those from neighbouring regions. This is due to the higher altitude and cooler microclimates of the Ventoux slopes. The grapes benefit from many hours of sunshine, which allows them to ripen well, while the altitude provides cooling and extends the ripening period. As a result, the grapes develop a nice balance between ripeness and freshness.
